The coastal plains can be divided into two parts; (A) the Western Coastal Plain and (B) The Eastern Coastal Plain.
(A) THE WESTERN COASTAL PLAIN:
1. The Western Coast is narrow due to low depositional action of the rivers.
2. The coast is characterized by seasonal rivers, high relief, dissected (cut up) terrain, faulted structures, indented (concave) coastline, rias, cliff, etc.
3. The coast has a number of bays, headland, estuaries, back water lagoons, swamps, salt marshes, mangrove forests, beautiful beaches, etc.
(B) THE WESTERN COASTAL PLAIN:
1. The Eastern Coast is characterized by the deltaic plains, which are formed by the depositional activities of the rivers.
2. Extensive deltas of the rivers Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri are the characteristic features of this coast.
