1. As the Ganga Plain is leading in agriculture, many of its industries are based on agricultural raw materials like sugar cane, cotton, rice, oilseeds, jute, etc.
2. Industries in the Upper Ganga Plain:
a. Sugar industry is the most developed industry of this region.
b. Cotton textile mills are located at Kanpur, Rampur, Allahabad and Mirzapur.
c. Leather industry has flourished at Kanpur and Agra, Kanpur has jute mills also.
3. Industries in the Middle Ganga Plain:
a. This region has mostly cottage and small scale industries.
b. Handloom industry is developed in Mirzapur, Gorakhpur, Varanasi and Patna.
c. Blanket and carpets are made in Mirzapur, Bhadohi and Varanasi.
d. Jute Mills are located at Gorakhpur and Samastipur.
e. Silk saree industry is developed in Varanasi and Bhagalpur.
f. Barauni has a petrochemical complex, an oil refinery and a fertilizer plant.
4. Industries in the Lower Ganga Plain:
a. The availability of coal, minerals, cheap and abundant labour, water and a huge market have helped the development of industries in the region.
b. Most of the industries are located in the Hugli Valley and Asansol-Durgapur region.
c. Iron and steel industry is located at Kulti, Burnpur, Asansol and Durgapur.
d. Jute mills are located along the banks of the Hugli River. Cotton textile industry is also developed.
e. Chemical industry is concentrated in Kolkata and Howrah.
f. Paper industry is developed in Kolkata, Titagarh, Naihati and Triveni.
g. Chittaranjan manufactures locomotives. Haldia has a petrochemical complex, an oil refinery and a fertilizer plant.
