1. Tanks called 'Kere' in Kannada are the main traditional sources of irrigation in the Central Karnataka Plateau.
2. They are fed by the drainage channels and streams in the valley.
3. The tanks on a channel or stream are built in a series, usually a few kilometers apart. By this arrangement, the outflow of an upstream tank supplies water to the next tank downstream and so on.
4. The arrangement ensures that (1) there is no wastage through outflow and (2) the seepage (leakage) of a tank higher up in the series would be collected in the next lower one.
