1. Asiatic black bears, langurs, Himalayan goats and antelopes are some of the animals of the Himalayan forests.
2. The Indian rhinoceros, once abundant throughout the foothill zone is now endangered. The Kashmir stag (Hangul) is near extinction (death).
3. In remote and high parts of the Himalayas, snow leopards, brown bears, lesser pandas and Tibetan Yaks are found in limited numbers.
4. The yak has been domesticated and is used as a draft animal in Ladakh.
5. The Himalayas have a rich bird life. Birds are more abundant in the east than in the west. Some of the common Himalayan birds are different species (class) of magpies and whistling thrushes.
