How is ammonia gas prepared in the laboratory? Explain with a diagram.
Ans.
  1. A mixture of ammonium chloride and slaked lime in the ratio 3:2 is taken in a hard glass test tube. A cork with a delivery rube is fixed to the test tube. The delivery tube is attached to the lower end of a lime tower. The apparatus is arranged as shown in the figure.

  1. The test tube is heated.
  2. The gas is allowed to pass through the lime tower to dry it.
  3. The ammonia gas is collected by holding an inverted gas jar over the lime tower, by the downward displacement of air.
  4. The gas jar is slowly removed from the lime tower and covered with a glass lid.
