My dear Kamal,

I was really happy to read your letter. You’ve rightly classified me as a borrower. But I’m a borrower of books, not of money. I confess to the waekness of forgetting to return the books I borrow. I sometimes feel, like Falstaff, that ‘paying back’ is a double labour better dispensed wirh.

But, to be earnest, I am extremely sorry for the delay in returning your novel. I supposed that your bracketing me with Coleridge was jocular. I’ve only one thing in common with Coleridge – indolence. Anyway, I will call on you on 20th February, of course with that delightful book of yours.

                                                                                                                                                        Yours lovingly,

xyz
