1) In modern states, direct democracy cannot survive due to large territory and population.
2) Therefore, the citizens elect their representatives who can think speak and act on behalf of the people take and implement decisions.
3) It is called representative democracy since government is formed from among the elected representatives of people.
4) Since the people express their views indirectly through their representatives it is called indirect democracy.
