Respected Sir ,
It is regrettable that several States of India have not stopped to deal in lottery tickets . Millions of poor people are tempted to buy these tickets in the hope of winning a prize . With the exeption of a few lucky individuals , they are bound to face disappointment month after month . It is paradoxical that the Governmaent committed to the abolition of poverty should sponsor a scheme calculated to rob the poor of their hard – earned money .
It is argued that the money thus obtained from the people is spent on nation – building activities. But the government is not justified in adopting any means to raise money for nation building schemes .It must be realised that lottery encourages gambling and demoralises the people . Mahatma Gandhi , the Father of the Nation , would not have approved of it .
The State Governments should ponder over the moral and financial impact of their lotteries on the people , and scrap them forthwith .
Yours truly ,
X.Y.Z.
