Adult Literacy Shibir at St. Agnes School
Nashik , January 19 : The Adult Literacy Campaign conducted by St. Agnes School is quite a hit . The brainchild of the Principal , Sr. Mary Kutti , the classes are attended by 200 men and women above the age of 40 who come each evening on week days . It began with the students of Stds . IX and X making a survey of the town shortlisted almost 1200 adults who were uneducated . 723 of these were women . Then began the motivation programme . Students would first go to the respective homes and try to motivate the adults concered . If this failed , they would go with the teachers .
It is heartening to note that there are about 200 adilts students but the emphasis is on trying to enrol some more . The fund for books and other materials comes from the sale of newspaper , old clothes and the like . Donations from parents and sponsors have also helped in a big way . Classes are conducted from 6.30 p.m to 8p.m. on the school premises . Different students take up teaching on different days . Sr. Mary Kutti has drawn up the syllabi to the taught . It essentially consists of the three R’s . There is no homework and no examination . The adult – students are also encouraged to talk about themselves . Teaching is done in the mother tongue .
At present , there are four classes , one each in Hindi , Marathi , Konkani and Malayalam . May the noble efforts of all those involved in this laudable project be crowned with success .
